About Tika

Euphemia LatiQue 'Tika' Sumpter was born June 20, 1980, in Queens, New York City, and studied at Marymount Manhattan College before finding her way into entertainment through hosting. Her first on-camera job was as the host of Best Friend's Date (2004–05), a reality series on The N — a start that taught her the camera-facing ease she'd carry into every acting role. In 2005 she landed the part that would introduce her to a mass audience: Layla Williamson on ABC's daytime soap One Life to Live, which she played regularly through 2010. Five years of daytime television is a forge — hundreds of episodes, scripts landing daily, scenes shot at speed — and Sumpter came out of it a professional in the fullest sense.

She made her film debut in 2010's Stomp the Yard: Homecoming, then stacked supporting roles in studio comedies and dramas: What's Your Number? (2011), Sparkle (2012), and Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas (2013). In 2011 she took a recurring role as Raina Thorpe on Gossip Girl, stepping into the Upper East Side's orbit for eleven episodes. But her defining television role was still ahead. From 2013 to 2021, Sumpter starred as Candace Young on the OWN prime-time soap The Haves and the Have Nots — Tyler Perry's sprawling drama that became one of the network's signature hits. As Candace, she played eight seasons of ambition, survival, and reinvention, anchoring a show that ran for 196 episodes and made her a fixture in millions of households.

While The Haves and the Have Nots ran, her film career accelerated. She played Angela Payton in the action comedies Ride Along (2014) and Ride Along 2 (2016) opposite Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, appeared as Yvonne Fair in the James Brown biopic Get On Up (2014), and took roles in the Robert Redford crime drama The Old Man & the Gun (2018) and the Tyler Perry romantic comedy Nobody's Fool (2018). Then came the role that changed how the industry saw her: in 2016 she produced and starred as Michelle Robinson Obama in Southside with You, Richard Tanne's romantic drama about the Obamas' first date. Playing a living icon — a former First Lady, on the eve of her husband's presidency — required nerve, research, and restraint, and Sumpter delivered all three, earning an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture. Producing it herself meant she wasn't waiting for permission; she was making the film she wanted to be seen in.

From 2019 to 2021 she starred as Alicia Johnson in ABC's Mixed-ish, the Black-ish prequel, playing the matriarch of a mixed-race family navigating the eighties. Then came the franchise that introduced her to a new generation: Maddie Wachowski in Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), returning for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), plus the Paramount+ spin-off Knuckles — the warm, capable human center of a CGI-driven blockbuster series. She has also lent her voice to Final Space (as Quinn/Nightfall across 36 episodes) and appeared in recent series including Survival of the Thickest and Watson. Off screen, she married Nicholas James in 2022, and they have one child.

Tika Sumpter's career is a case study in range and durability: daytime soap to prime-time soap to sitcom to franchise blockbuster, with a self-produced prestige biopic in the middle. She has worked with Tyler Perry, Kevin Hart, Ice Cube, Robert Redford, and a blue hedgehog — and in every register, she brings the same grounded, camera-easy presence that started on Best Friend's Date two decades ago.

The Previously take

Our read on Tika Sumpter.

Tika Sumpter's résumé shouldn't work on paper — soap queen, Tyler Perry universe, holiday-timed comedies, a Michelle Obama biopic she produced herself, and then Sonic the Hedgehog's mom. But it works because she does: she is one of those actors whose presence stabilizes whatever she's in.

Southside with You is the proof of ambition: producing and starring as Michelle Obama is a move most actors wait decades to attempt. She did it mid-career, on her own terms. And eight seasons of Candace Young on The Haves and the Have Nots is the proof of craft — that is 196 episodes of never phoning it in.
