The Story

The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs are starting over — again — and this time they're doing it against the hardest schedule in program history. Head coach Jeremy Luther didn't mince words when he released the 2026-27 non-conference slate: "We have put together one of the most difficult non-conference schedules in the country and the most difficult schedule Gardner-Webb has had in my 14 years." Fourteen years at the school, and he's sending a rebuilding roster to UConn, Texas, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Kentucky, and Georgia. For a program coming off a 4-29 season, it's either madness or a statement of intent. Luther is betting it's the latter.

The 2025-26 campaign was the valley. Gardner-Webb went 4-29 overall and 1-15 in the Big South, finishing ninth in a nine-team league, scoring 68 points a game while surrendering 85.5. It was Luther's second season in charge after his promotion from associate head coach in March 2024, and the bottom fell out of a roster that had gone 11-20 the year before. In the portal era, a season like that either ends a coach or forges one. Luther's response was to tear up the easy path entirely: six games against Power-4 opponents, road trips to the sport's cathedrals, and a roster rebuilt around youth that will either grow up fast or get buried trying.

The gauntlet opens November 2 at UConn — the Huskies, who played for the national title last spring, falling 69-63 to Michigan — and doesn't let up. Three days later it's Texas in Austin. Then South Carolina visits the region on November 14, perennial contender UNC Greensboro comes to Boiling Springs on November 18, and December brings Wake Forest, a trip to Athens to face Georgia on December 20, and a December 28 date at Kentucky to close the non-conference slate. Mixed in are winnable home dates with Erskine, North Carolina Central, Queens, and Campbell, but make no mistake: this schedule is designed to harden a young team in November and December so it can survive the Big South in January and February.

And young it is. The 2026-27 roster is a patchwork of returning sophomores who took their lumps last winter and veterans brought in to steady them. The best building blocks are the sophomores who played real minutes as freshmen: 6-foot-9 forward Jacob Hogarth averaged 11.0 points and 7.6 rebounds, and 6-foot-1 guard Spence Sims shot a scorching 49.3 percent from three while averaging 10.3 points — a freshman shooting stroke that gives Luther a genuine floor-spacer. Fellow sophomores Jacob Hudson (10.1 points per game) and Colin Hawkins (27.6 minutes a night) are rotation cornerstones, while juniors Ace Talbert, Curtis Williams III, and Isaiah Hicks provide backcourt continuity. The frontcourt gets reinforcements in senior Riek Riek, junior Ahmadou Ndiaye, and 6-foot-11 junior Brave Rutsindura, plus sophomores Sam Nosakhare and senior NaVuan Peterson. Senior guards Bo Barber, Seth Brown, Mikhali Pocknett, and Jackson Skipper, junior guard Paul Lindberg, junior guard DJ Jefferson — a Minnesota prep product who was the highest-rated recruit in the class — and a freshman group headlined by Rue Wells, David Gaymon, and Chinedu Okpara round out a 17-man roster with real size at nearly every spot.

Luther's program-building credentials run deep at Gardner-Webb. He arrived in Boiling Springs in 2013 as an assistant, was promoted to associate head coach in 2017, and spent eleven seasons inside the machine before getting the top job — including the 2018-19 season, the greatest in program history, when the Runnin' Bulldogs went 23-12, won the Big South tournament, and reached the NCAA Division I tournament for the first time. That team drew 1-seed Virginia in the first round and fell to the eventual national champions, but the banner hangs forever. Before Luther's promotion, Tim Craft built the modern program across eleven seasons; before Craft, Chris Holtmann — now one of the sport's most prominent coaches — ran the bench from 2010 to 2013 and posted a 21-13 season.

The identity is right there in the nickname. The "Runnin'" Bulldogs have always wanted to play fast and loose, pressing and pushing tempo at Paul Porter Arena, the on-campus gym tucked inside the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center. The problem the last two seasons is that running requires stops, and Gardner-Webb hasn't gotten them — the 2025-26 defense ranked among the nation's worst. If the 2026-27 team is going to turn the brutal schedule into something more than a highlight reel for opponents, it starts on that end: defending without fouling, rebounding with the newfound size, and turning those stops into the transition game the nickname promises.

The Big South, for its part, is winnable for a team that grows up. High Point has become the league's standard-bearer, Winthrop and UNC Asheville reload annually, and Longwood, Radford, Presbyterian, and Charleston Southern all take turns crashing the party. But the league's parity is also its mercy: in a one-bid conference, the regular season is seeding and the tournament is everything, and a team that takes its November beatings against UConn and Kentucky can be battle-hardened by March in a way that a soft schedule never produces. That's the bet Luther is making, and he's making it with his own job as the implicit stake.

There's real romance in the audacity of it. Mid-major programs coming off 4-29 don't usually book the sport's blue bloods; they book guarantee games they can survive and home games they can win. Gardner-Webb is doing the opposite — daring its young roster to measure itself against the best, in their buildings, on television, with nothing to lose and everything to learn. If Hogarth keeps developing into an all-conference forward, if Sims's jumper translates to bigger stages, if the size inside finally defends the rim, the Runnin' Bulldogs could be the Big South's chaos agent by February. And if not, they'll have played the hardest schedule in school history and lived to tell about it. In Boiling Springs, that's not a consolation. That's the whole point of being the Runnin' Bulldogs.
