Developing story — first published Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 5:01 p.m. PT. Updated Saturday at 7:13 p.m. PT: Wichita police have released the ages of the two people killed, the number of people injured and new details about the driver. Previously will update this story as police release more information.
A vehicle drove onto a youth soccer field at Stryker Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon and struck people gathered for a game, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and injuring 11 other people, Wichita police said at an evening briefing. Police said all 11 of the injured were believed to have non-life-threatening injuries. The driver, a 34-year-old woman, was taken into custody at the scene and was cooperating with investigators, police said, and the vehicle remained there as investigators worked into the evening.
Sedgwick County's 911 center received multiple calls at about 3:25 p.m. reporting that a vehicle had driven through the game, Wichita police Capt. Aaron Moses said at a briefing near the complex. The Police Department said in a post on X that it was investigating “a mass casualty incident involving a vehicle.” Moses said the driver was in custody and that “there is no additional ongoing threat to the public from that driver.” He described what happened as a tragedy.
A 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man are dead
At Saturday evening’s briefing, Moses said the two people killed were a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, and USA TODAY reported that both were pronounced dead at the scene. At the afternoon briefing, Moses had declined to release their ages while officers worked to notify their families; police have still not released their names, and identification is pending. It was not yet clear, he said, which soccer clubs were playing on the field at the time.
Reuters reported the updated toll from the evening briefing: a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man killed and 11 people hospitalized, 10 of them with traumatic injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. USA TODAY reported the same count — 11 people taken to local hospitals — and CNN reported that the injured include children and that their injuries were non-life threatening. At the afternoon briefing, police had not said how many people were hurt or how serious their injuries were; the evening update supplied the numbers.
Witnesses described a truck crossing the fields
Witnesses told KWCH, the CNN affiliate in Wichita, that a black pickup truck jumped the curb and drove onto the field, where a lot of families and children were gathered for the game. One witness told the station the truck crossed the youth soccer fields, struck multiple people and did not stop for another 100 to 200 yards. An attendee said he was with his family when the truck came onto the field, and two witnesses described hearing a loud noise at the time.
The station reported that dozens of emergency responders treated victims on the field, including performing CPR. Those details come from witnesses and the station's reporting at the scene; police have not yet confirmed the vehicle's path across the complex or how fast it was moving.
A large response in northeast Wichita
Wichita police officers, other local law enforcement agencies, the Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County EMS all responded to the complex, KWCH reported. Yellow tape closed off entrances to the grounds, and police urged drivers to avoid the area near 29th Street and Greenwich Road while investigators worked. CNN reported a large law enforcement response at the complex.
By early evening the entrances remained taped off and the grounds were closed while the investigation continued.Stryker Sports Complex, on North Greenwich Road in northeast Wichita, has several indoor and outdoor fields and is one of the region's main homes for youth soccer — the kind of place that fills with players, parents and folding chairs on a fall Saturday. On this one, families who came for a game found themselves witnesses to a police investigation instead.
What police have not said
Moses said it was not yet clear how the vehicle got onto the field — the playing area is fenced, with a concrete runway leading to a parking lot — or how fast it was traveling. Fox News reported that authorities had not confirmed whether the driver acted intentionally. CNN reported that the driver is a 34-year-old woman who “has been cooperative” with investigators, and USA TODAY reported that she was cooperating with the investigation; police said they were still working to determine what happened and whether charges will be filed, and no charges had been announced Saturday evening. Police have not released the driver's name, and beyond the witnesses' description of a black pickup truck, police have not released any make or model for the vehicle.
Moses also said two juveniles were inside the vehicle when it drove through the complex. He did not give their ages, say how they were connected to the driver or say whether they were hurt. Officers were interviewing the many families and witnesses who were at the complex when it happened, and officials were still working through family notifications for the victims.
Games halted nearby, and a mayor's statement
The Kansas State High School Activities Association said games at a flag football state championship were suspended at an adjacent Stryker Complex field while police worked at the scene.
CNN reported that the complex said all events at Stryker have been canceled until further notice, and asked that people keep the affected families in their thoughts and prayers.
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu said in a statement that she was “heartbroken by reports of a tragic incident at Stryker Sports Complex,” adding: “My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, especially the children and families involved.” She asked people to avoid the area while first responders worked and said more information would be shared as it becomes available.
What happens next
The evening news conference answered several of the questions Moses had left open Saturday afternoon — the victims' ages, the injury count and the driver's age — and the department said it would provide further updates as more information is confirmed. The hardest questions remain: the names of the boy and the man who were killed, which police will release only after their families have been notified; whether the driver will face charges; and how a vehicle came to be on a fenced youth soccer field in the middle of a game.
For now, the confirmed picture is narrow and terrible: a Saturday youth soccer game, a vehicle where no vehicle should have been, a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man dead, 11 people in hospitals — and a city waiting to learn how this happened.
