Ohio State at Indiana, Notre Dame at BYU: Saturday's Showdowns Headline the Season's Best Slate

Two top-10 showdowns — No. 4 Ohio State at No. 5 Indiana at noon ET on FOX and No. 2 Notre Dame at No. 8 BYU under the lights in Provo — headline a Week 7 Saturday with six ranked-on-ranked games and the Third Saturday in October in between.

The Short Version

Some Saturdays ask you to choose. This one refuses to let you. College football's Week 7 slate on Saturday, October 17 is the deepest of the season so far: sixteen games involving ranked teams, six ranked-on-ranked matchups, and — spread perfectly across the day — two top-10 showdowns that will redraw the playoff picture before the night is over. It begins at noon Eastern in Bloomington with a top-five Big Ten clash and a grudge attached, and it ends under the lights in Provo, where College GameDay has set up camp and No. 2 Notre Dame walks into the loudest road environment of its season. In between, the SEC serves up its most romantic rivalry and a handful of games that will eliminate somebody. Here is the viewing guide, window by window, with what is actually at stake in each one. More coverage lives on the Previously sports hub.

Noon ET: No. 4 Ohio State at No. 5 Indiana (FOX)

Start here, because the day does. No. 4 Ohio State (5-1) visits No. 5 Indiana (6-0) at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, kicking off at noon ET on FOX, with Ohio State favored by 3.5 points and the total set at 50.5, according to the lines tracked by Covers and Essentially Sports this week. This is a rematch of last year's Big Ten championship game, which Indiana won on its way through the College Football Playoff — a result that still sits in Ohio State's throat. Reporting from Men's Journal this week framed it plainly: the last two national champions meet at noon, the Buckeyes are hunting revenge, and Indiana is trying to turn one breakthrough win over Ohio State into a streak after decades of losing in this series.

The stakes need no decoration. Both teams are among the Big Ten's remaining unbeatens in conference play, and the winner takes the inside track to the Big Ten title game and the inside lane in the playoff race. For Ohio State, a second loss does not end the season, but it removes every margin for error that remains between here and December. For Indiana, a win would validate everything — the idea that last December was not a lightning strike but a changing of the guard. Watch the matchup the preview coverage keeps circling: Indiana's defense against Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith, the kind of individual battle that tends to decide games like this in the second half. Follow both programs through the sports section all weekend.

The Rest of the Early Window

The noon window is no one-game undercard. Florida visits No. 7 Texas at noon ET on ABC, a measuring-stick trip for the Gators against a Longhorns team that cannot afford a home stumble in a crowded SEC race. At the same hour on ESPN, No. 16 Mississippi State plays at No. 22 LSU in Baton Rouge — a game both teams need, and one the preview coverage describes as close to must-win territory for an LSU side that has already lost twice and has no room left in the playoff conversation. Settle in with two screens if you can; the early window alone could produce the day's biggest headline before the headliners even kick.

3:30 p.m. ET: The Third Saturday in October

The afternoon belongs to Knoxville. No. 6 Alabama at No. 14 Tennessee, 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC, is the latest edition of the Third Saturday in October, one of the sport's great standing appointments. Both teams arrive 5-1, according to the week's preview coverage, and both arrive knowing the loser spends the rest of the season needing help. Neyland Stadium for this rivalry, with the season tilting on it, is as good as a college football afternoon gets.

The 3:30 window stacks around it. No. 13 Missouri visits No. 9 Ole Miss at 3:30 p.m. ET on the SEC Network, a game with direct consequences for the top of the SEC standings. And Auburn travels to No. 1 Georgia at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN — the Deep South's oldest rivalry, with the nation's top-ranked team defending home turf against an Auburn side that would love nothing more than to be the story of the weekend. Three ranked SEC games in one window means the conference race will look materially different by dinner.

Primetime: No. 2 Notre Dame at No. 8 BYU (7:30 p.m. ET, ABC)

Then the day saves its strangest, best matchup for last. No. 2 Notre Dame (6-0) at No. 8 BYU (5-0), 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC from LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, with ESPN's College GameDay on campus for the occasion. It is a rare meeting between Notre Dame's independence and a Big 12 power, the kind of intersectional game the sport used to produce in bowl season and now, wonderfully, produces in mid-October. The week's odds coverage has Notre Dame favored by double digits on the road, which tells you what the market thinks of the Irish — and exactly how dangerous the spot is, because unbeaten home underdogs at altitude, at night, with a season-making win available, are how favorites' seasons come apart.

Notre Dame's math is the cruelest in the sport. As an independent with no conference championship game to repair its résumé, the Irish cannot afford a loss — not with a trip to face Miami looming next month and no league title weekend to fall back on. Every week is effectively a playoff game, and this week's is on the road against a top-10 team. BYU, meanwhile, plays with house money and a home crowd that has waited for a night like this. Win, and the Cougars own the weekend and a genuine playoff path.

And the Nightcap Around It

The primetime window is not a single act. Florida State visits No. 3 Miami at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN, renewing a rivalry that defined an era and still carries real weight in the ACC race — and it doubles as a preview of the test waiting for Notre Dame next month. Ranked matchups between Oklahoma State and Houston round out the late slate, and the after-dark window carries its own ranked action for anyone still standing at midnight Eastern. Sixteen ranked teams in action, six ranked-on-ranked games, three windows, no dead air.

How the Day Will Be Remembered

By Sunday morning, the playoff picture will have a new shape. Either Indiana or Ohio State owns the Big Ten's inside track. Either Notre Dame survives Provo and tightens its grip on a top seed, or BYU detonates the bracket math for half the country. The SEC will have sorted at least one layer of its logjam in Knoxville and Oxford. That is what the best Saturday of the season looks like: not one game of the year, but three of them, stacked sunrise to midnight. Start at noon on FOX, finish after dark on ABC, and keep the Previously sports hub open in between — the desk will be tracking each result as the picture changes.
