October's First Drop Day: Howard Jordans, a Mamba AF1, and Zendaya's Second On Collection

Howard Bisons branding on an AJ1 Low, a Mamba AF1, a new New Balance silhouette, and Zendaya's second On collection — October 1 was a full day.

October 1 was a loaded day for sneakerheads, and I say that as somebody who camped out for drops back when the line was the whole point. The headline release: the Air Jordan 1 Low OG 'Howard University' dropped today for $155 — College Navy and red with Howard Bisons branding on the heel, landing right at the start of HBCU homecoming season. That's not a coincidence, that's a calendar.

And that was just the door charge. Nike's Kobe Air Force 1 Low 'Black/Purple Stardust' released today at $125, pairing a Mamba-snakeskin upper with the 8 and 24 on the heels — part of Nike's ongoing run of putting the Kobe design language onto non-signature silhouettes, which keeps the Bryant estate's catalog alive beyond the Protro line. New Balance dropped the 204L 'Truffle Salt' for $120, a new low-profile silhouette pulling from '70s runners and indoor soccer shoes. The Caitlin Clark signature Caitlin 1 arrived in 'Racer Blue' at $140. And Zendaya's second co-created collection with On launched globally today, with the Cloudnova Moon Mary Jane debuting in three colorways and pop-ups in LA, Paris, Tokyo and Chengdu.

Here's what I actually think about all of this, because somebody has to say it straight: the Howard 1 is the pair of the day, and it's not close. A homecoming-season Jordan in Bison colors isn't just a shoe, it's a statement of where you come from — and HBCU culture has been carrying sneaker culture since before most of these brands had marketing departments. The brands figured out a long time ago that our culture moves their product. Sometimes they do it right, like this. Sometimes they're cosplaying and we all see it. This one's done right: school colors, the heel branding, the timing. Respect.

Worth it? Let me break it down the way I'd tell a friend over a drink. The Howard 1 at $155 is worth it if you're tied to the culture or you just love a clean navy-and-red shoe — it's an OG Low, which wears easy. The Kobe AF1 at $125 is a solid buy for anybody who wears AF1s anyway; the snakeskin and the heel numbers make it more than a plain white pair. The NB 204L is a gamble — new silhouette, no track record — try it on first. And the Zendaya x On stuff? It's fashion, not performance. Nothing wrong with that, just know what you're buying.

October stays stacked, by the way. The J Balvin x Air Jordan 4 'Amazonas' hits October 2 at $225, the Air Jordan 1 High OG 'Royal' drops October 10 at $185, and the Air Jordan 5 'Halloween' lands October 17 at $215 with glow-in-the-dark details. Pace yourself. Your wallet's got a month to survive.

The partnership behind this shoe is worth understanding, because it is the blueprint for how Jordan Brand does HBCUs now. Jordan and Howard signed a 20-year deal in 2022 — one of the brand’s flagship HBCU partnerships — and for years the heat stayed in-house: Air Jordan 6 and Air Jordan 4 Bison player exclusives that never left the locker room. The first public payoff was the white away-style AJ1 Low in 2024; this 2026 pair is the home counterpart — only the second Howard AJ1 Low to reach retail, ever. The 2023 AJ1 Low PE teased the relationship first. The details: College Navy/White-University Red, style code IX8478-410, a satin upper with suede accents, an exposed-stitch Swoosh, the sail Wings “AIR” logo with red detailing on the heel, and the Howard Bison mark honored on the heel. Navy leather across the toe, quarter, and heel; red along the outsole edge. It is unapologetically Howard — and it landed at the start of homecoming season on purpose.

The rest of October is a gauntlet, so budget accordingly. October 2 brings the J Balvin x Air Jordan 4 ‘Amazonas’ at $225 — the collab line that keeps redefining what a Jordan 4 can look like — plus kids’ AJ6 Low ‘Black/Pink Leopard.’ October 3 stacks the women’s AJ3 ‘Fireside’ ($205), the AJ16 ‘Black Pack’ ($245), and the AJ14 Low ‘Black Pack’ ($240). October 8: SoleFly x AJ5. October 10: the AJ1 High OG ‘Royal’ at $185 — a grail colorway that never needs hype. October 17: the AJ5 ‘Halloween’ at $215 with glow-in-the-dark details. October 24: the AJ12 ‘Fireside’ ($215). October 25: the AJ41 ‘University Red’ ($205). October 31: the AJ14 ‘Forest Green’ ($215) to close the month. That is a five-figure month if you are not careful. Pace yourself.

And the timing point deserves one more beat, because this is where the culture and the calendar meet. The Howard 1 dropped October 1, day one of homecoming season — and homecoming is the Super Bowl of HBCU culture. We have the full rundown of the season: who is kicking off this Saturday and the complete 2026 guide with every date, every matchup, every band. A homecoming-season Jordan in Bison colors is not merch. It is a uniform.
