Music Today: Sheryl Crow’s New Album Arrives, Stephen Bishop Announces Farewell Tour, and Friday’s Release Rush

Sheryl Crow’s twelfth studio album Pick You Up is out with seven songs about connection; singer-songwriter Stephen Bishop announced a 2027 farewell tour for the 50th anniversary of Careless; and Friday delivered new records from Margo Cilker and Chase & Status, deluxe editions from Carly Rae Jepsen and Shania Twain, and a Bruno Mars chart watch.

The Short Version

Yesterday’s release day was one of those Fridays where the big names and the deep cuts both show up. Our New Music Friday flagged the heaviest hitters in advance — but now the records are actually out, and two stories tower over the weekend: Sheryl Crow’s twelfth studio album arriving like a warm blanket, and Stephen Bishop announcing the end of a 50-year road. Here’s everything that landed.

Sheryl Crow just made the album of the moment, and it’s only seven songs long. Pick You Up, her twelfth studio album, arrived yesterday via Old Green Barn Productions — a lean seven-track record, every song co-written with longtime collaborator Jeff Trott, recorded at her Old Green Barn home studio. If you’ve followed Crow’s last decade, this one makes sense as a distillation: Americana/AAA rock, warm and lived-in, built for people who still buy the ticket and the vinyl.

The tracklist: “Freight Train,” “Perfect,” “Pick You Up,” “Flat Earth,” “I’ve Got Your Number,” “Heaven Help Us,” and “Freedom Bus” featuring Jesse Welles. The lead single “Freedom Bus” — released back on August 15 — is the emotional center. Crow wrote it after a visit to Arlington National Cemetery with her son, and it’s already done real work: it climbed to No. 9 on the Americana charts, and the album itself hit No. 13 before it was even out. She said the seven songs are “a commentary on being human and wanting connection” and “a soothing moisturizer on our chapped hearts.” That’s exactly the kind of record that finds people who need it.

And the road goes on. Crow will tour in 2027 on Kenny Chesney’s The Original Vibe Room Tour, alongside Chesney, Eric Church and Greylan James. For an artist this far into her career to keep choosing rooms and bills that put her in front of new ears — not just legacy-catalog nights — that’s the move of someone who still loves the work.

Stephen Bishop is saying goodbye. The singer-songwriter came out of retirement yesterday to announce a Farewell Tour marking the 50th anniversary of Careless, his 1976 debut. Think about that résumé for a second: Oscar-nominated, two-time Grammy-nominated, 15 million-plus records sold, and his songs covered by Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Beyoncé, Luciano Pavarotti and Steve Perry. That is not a career. That is a civilization.

The itinerary is real and it’s long. The tour kicks off March 13, 2027 with an already sold-out show at Phoenix’s Musical Instrument Museum, then runs through the U.S. — Skokie, Illinois (April 3), Kent, Ohio (April 8), Franklin, Tennessee (April 10), Derry, New Hampshire (June 3), New London, Connecticut (June 5), Elkton, Maryland (June 17), Red Bank, New Jersey (June 19) — and closes the American run on August 21, 2027 at San Diego’s Balboa Theatre, a hometown bookend for the San Diego native. Then it crosses the Atlantic: U.K. and Ireland dates in October 2027, including Dublin’s Vicar Street on October 21 and London’s Cadogan Hall on October 23, with David Wilcox on support. Fans will also want the commemorative vinyl — a 50th anniversary edition of Careless remastered by Bernie Grundman, sold out online with limited copies held for the tour dates.

Bishop’s announcement landed the way it should. Last night he played a sold-out show at the Grammy Museum’s Clive Davis Theater in Los Angeles with Jack Tempchin, Marcus Eaton and James Lee Stanley — a farewell tour announced on stage, to a room of people who actually showed up. You can’t buy that kind of moment with a press release. If any date is near you, this is the last train.

Friday’s drop list, rapid-fire. Margo Cilker released her third album Little White Cross via Fossil Records — ten tracks, from the title cut through “Ladybug,” “Molly and Me,” “State Line,” “Walls,” “Pauline,” “Road to Las Cruces,” “The Money,” “Maryhill Peaches Goodnoe Pears” and “Wolves.” Her last record, Valley of Heart’s Delight, made NPR Music’s 50 Best Albums of 2023, and she’s on tour October 9 through November 15 — October 17 at Boston’s Cafe 939, November 13 at The Roxy in West Hollywood, November 14 at The Chapel in San Francisco. The Americana world already knows her name; the rest of the world is catching up.

Chase & Status delivered their seventh album, Generic Everything, via 2Ruff/Warner UK, with Skrillex, Little Simz, Finesse Kid, Debbie and Giggs on guest duty. CD and vinyl land October 30. A drum-and-bass institution making their seventh record in the same year they’re still moving units — that’s what longevity looks like in electronic music.

Carly Rae Jepsen expanded her 2026 album with Day and Night (Continued), a deluxe edition adding eight B-sides for 32 songs total, via School Boy/Interscope. More music from one of the most consistent pop songwriters of the decade is never a bad thing.

Shania Twain also went deluxe: Little Miss Twain – The Places I’ll Go arrives with six extra tracks, including “Who Do You Love” with The Milk Carton Kids, via Republic. Brief and to the point: it’s out now.

Bruno Mars performing — 'I Just Might' is one week from the longest No. 1 run in Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs history.

Chart watch: Bruno Mars, one week out. This is an update only, because we laid out the full math yesterday: “I Just Might” has tied Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “Luther” at 31 weeks atop Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Next week’s chart — out October 17 — decides it. A 32nd week makes Mars the outright owner of the longest reign in the chart’s history. Seven days.

Pick You Up out Oct. 9, 2026 via Old Green Barn Productions: 7 tracks, all co-written with Jeff Trott; lead single “Freedom Bus” (feat. Jesse Welles) hit No. 9 on Americana charts; album hit No. 13 pre-release. 2027 tour with Kenny Chesney, Eric Church, Greylan James. Carly Rae Jepsen Day and Night (Continued): 8 B-sides, 32 songs (School Boy/Interscope). Shania Twain Little Miss Twain – The Places I’ll Go deluxe: 6 extra tracks incl. “Who Do You Love” with The Milk Carton Kids (Republic).
