ATLANTA FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2026
For over a decade, Olu has been one half of a whole. As Johnny Venus, he’s spent his career as the melodic counterweight inside EARTHGANG — the Atlanta duo’s singer-rapper, the harmony to WowGr8’s (aka Doctur Dot’s) bars. Today he steps out alone: THE 11TH HOUR, his debut solo album, is out now via Sincethe80s and Epic Records. Twelve tracks, executive-produced by The-Dream. And it’s not a rap album with R&B songs on it — it’s a full stylistic departure into R&B, and the boldest move of his career.
02 A Different Kind of Hour
The album’s title comes from Venus’ fascination with the symbolism of the master number 11 — duality, alignment, the relationships and experiences that shape a person’s identity, as That Eric Alper reported when the album was announced last month. That idea runs through a record concerned with love, connection, healing, spirituality and personal transformation, drawing from funk and soul while planting its flag firmly in R&B. HotNewHipHop’s album page wrote that the result is a “lush and beautiful experience that weaves its way through various moods” — a more R&B-centric release than anything Olu has done before, mixing in plenty of other genres along the way. The review at Shatter the Standards, published today, wrote of it this way: fifty years after quiet storm sold the bedroom as shelter, Venus “sings that shelter beautifully.”
The sequencing tells the story. Per That Eric Alper’s announcement coverage, the record opens simply with “Intro” before moving into “On and On” and the previously released “Porsche 911”; the middle stretch runs through “Runway Killer,” “Sarahtonin,” “American Dream” and the 6LACK collaboration “So Beautiful.” It’s a slow-burn architecture — no skits, no posse cuts for the sake of it, just a singer working through something in real time.

03 The-Dream Didn’t Just Drop By
The most significant credit on the album isn’t a feature — it’s the executive producer line. The-Dream, the Grammy-winning songwriter, artist and producer, didn’t just contribute a song; he executive-produced the entire project, helping shape Venus’ move into a sound rooted explicitly in R&B. That matters because The-Dream doesn’t lend his name to transitions he doesn’t believe in, and his fingerprints are all over the album’s central bet: that Olu’s voice — always the most purely musical instrument in EARTHGANG — can carry a whole record on its own.
The guests were chosen like a producer’s shortlist, not a label’s. 6LACK appears on “So Beautiful,” a duet about calling your partner through the whole evening. Alissia and INK! join Venus on “Sarahtonin” — the single released September 26, produced by Natra Average, built on what one outlet called warping guitar riffs and a cosmic, realm-crafting feel. Asha Imuno and the Spillage Village collective close the album on “Can You Pray For Me?” The pre-release run gave fans three early glimpses of the range: “I Want You Back” (produced by Dominique Sanders of Strange Music’s The Xtraordinair$), the self-produced “Porsche 911,” and “Nightmares.” Behind the boards, Wu10 co-produced “On & On,” setting the tone for the R&B direction from the jump.

04 The Duo-Act Solo Wave
THE 11TH HOUR lands in the middle of a genuine trend: duo acts sending their members out solo. Uristocrat’s New Music Friday notes the move follows a run of recent solo-project announcements from duo acts across hip-hop. And in Venus’ case, there’s a direct precedent at home — his partner WowGr8 released the solo project Howl At Da Moon about twelve months ago, leaning into a more comedic hip-hop style, per the Legends Will Never Die review. The two solo turns couldn’t be more different in temperament, which is exactly the point: EARTHGANG always contained multitudes, and now each half gets to prove it separately.
What makes Venus’ turn interesting is the label mechanics. Rather than going independent, he signed the solo project to Epic Records through Sincethe80s — major-label machinery behind an R&B departure. That’s a bet that the audience for this music is bigger than the EARTHGANG faithful, and it’s a bet Epic was willing to take. For an artist audiences have known for more than a decade as one half of a Grammy-nominated duo, as That Eric Alper put it, the album finally gives Venus an entire project to explore material from a more individual perspective.

05 Why the R&B Pivot Works
Here’s the open secret about EARTHGANG: for years, the most memorable moments on their records were the ones where Venus sang. The hooks, the bridges, the harmonies stacked under the verses — Olu was always the duo’s melodic engine, the reason their alternative rap never quite fit in any single box. THE 11TH HOUR is what happens when the engine gets the whole car.
And the timing is honest. This isn’t a contractual-obligation solo record or a mixtape of duo leftovers — it’s a considered, The-Dream-executive-produced statement about love and healing and spirituality, arriving on the same Friday as Tobe Nwigwe’s diaspora opus and Ovrkast.’s underground coronation. October 9, 2026, is quietly one of the strongest hip-hop and R&B release days of the year, and Venus isn’t just participating in it — he’s making the case that the R&B lane was his all along.
