Sixteen years. That's how long Friday the 13th has been away from screens. Sixteen years of nothing. And now? Peacock said bet. October 15. All eight episodes. Same day. Binge the whole nightmare before Halloween.
Crystal Lake. The prequel. Not Jason — PAM. Pamela Voorhees. And here's the thing the franchise has been sitting on for 46 years: she was the killer in the original 1980 film. Jason didn't pick up the machete until the sequel. Pam is the inciting incident of the entire mythology — and as Linda Cardellini put it, “she's only in such a small fraction of the movies and there's very little actually known about her.” That's the whole pitch. Eight hours to find out who Pamela Voorhees was before the lake took her son and the grief took everything else.
The pedigree is stupid good. Created, written, and executive produced by Brad Caleb Kane — the man behind It: Welcome to Derry and Tokyo Vice, so he knows exactly how to make a town feel wrong — and produced by A24, the studio that has quietly become the gold standard for horror that actually means something. Victor Miller, who wrote the original Friday the 13th story, is executive producing alongside Marc Toberoff, the Barsamians, Stuart Manashil, Tyson Bidner, Michael Lennox, and Roy Lee. Harry Manfredini — the man who composed the original's theme — is back on theme music. This is not a cash grab. This is the family business being handled by people who respect the family.
The canon move is the bold one. Kane confirmed the series won't take place in the '50s the way the films do — it's set in 1971, nearly a year after Pam's young, sickly son Jason tragically drowned in the town lake. “I wanted to touch on all the pop-culture artifacts that were tangential to the America from which these movies were born,” Kane said. The official synopsis: single mother Pam Voorhees, unable to shake her grief, has two strangers show up at her door digging into her past — and a disturbing chain of events sets in motion, leaving the townspeople of Crystal Lake wondering: just who is Pam Voorhees?
The cast is locked: William Catlett as Officer Levon Brooks, Devin Kessler as his journalist sister Briana, Cameron Scoggins as Dorf, Gwendolyn Sundstrom as Grace — and young Callum Vinson, from Chucky, as Jason himself, recurring. Nick Cordileone plays Ralph (yes, Crazy Ralph is back at the lake), with Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch, and Phoenix Parnevik rounding out the town. Directing duties split three ways: Michael Lennox took the first three episodes, Celine Held and Logan George the middle three, Quyen Tran the final two. And for the purists: per Kane, Jason appears — but he won't be wearing the hockey mask. This is before all that. This is the wound, not the scar.
Cardellini was, by Kane's own admission, the first and only name he wanted. He wrote the pilot with images of her Netflix series Dead to Me in his head — a three-time Emmy nominee for Mad Men and Dead to Me, stepping into a role originated by Betsy Palmer in 1980 and later played by Paula Shaw, Marilyn Poucher, and Nana Visitor. The official trailer, which dropped in mid-September, charts the transformation the whole season is building toward: Pam going from serving meals as a camp lunch lady to serving kills to everyone who wronged her and her son. A24 and Peacock aren't shying away from the summer-camp scares and the gore that made the originals iconic.
This is the first meaningful Friday the 13th project in 17 years — since Marcus Nispel's 2009 reboot — across a franchise that now spans eleven films, a remake, video games, and comics. Last year brought only a short film, Sweet Revenge, starring Schuyler White as Jason; before that, years of legal limbo and a Bryan Fuller pilot that Kevin Williamson once called “so beautifully realized” and “bloody horrific” but never made it to air. Now it's real: eight 60-minute episodes, all dropping Thursday, October 15, exclusively on Peacock — with Sky carrying it in the UK and Ireland.
