College football has had chaotic Saturdays before. It has never had a regular-season Saturday quite like this one.
CNN reported that five of the top seven teams in the AP Top 25 lost on the same regular-season day for the first time in history, citing Sportradar. The teams were No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 5 Indiana, No. 6 Alabama and No. 7 Texas. Only No. 3 Miami and No. 4 Ohio State survived among the top seven, and Ohio State needed to beat Indiana head-to-head to do it.
According to CNN, the last remotely close day was January 2, 1989, when five of the top eight lost, and those games were in bowls, not the regular season. CNN also reported that it is the first time Nos. 1 and 2 lost on the same regular-season day since 2012, when Oregon lost to Stanford and Kansas State lost to Baylor.
The scale of the day is easier to understand game by game, because almost every result carried its own streak, drought or historical marker. Taken together, they do not just reorder a poll. They reset the assumptions that had shaped the first half of the season.
Georgia falls at home to unranked Auburn
The biggest shock came in Athens. No. 1 Georgia, now 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the SEC, lost 27-24 at home to unranked Auburn, now 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the SEC.
CNN reported that Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton threw two interceptions and fumbled with under a minute left. Alex McPherson's 34-yard field goal on the final play won it for Auburn.
The context makes the result even harder to absorb for Georgia. According to CNN, Georgia had won 53 straight games against unranked teams and was a 20.5-point favorite in the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry. Auburn's win was its first in Athens since 2005 and its first road win over a No. 1 team since winning at Florida in 1994.
Auburn coach Alex Golesh pointed to a longer build after the game. "We're going to build Auburn back to where everybody wants it, one game at a time," Golesh said, according to CNN's reporting of his comments. The full quote reported by CNN began, "We're just continuing to plug," and ended with, "Just hang with us."
CNN also noted another layer of history: a No. 1 team losing to an unranked team in consecutive weeks — Texas lost to Oklahoma last week — is the first time that has happened since Notre Dame and Michigan in October 1990.
Notre Dame loses at BYU, Texas falls to Florida
No. 2 Notre Dame lost 28-24 at No. 8 BYU. As Previously reported in its coverage of BYU's 28-24 win over Notre Dame, BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier accounted for four touchdowns, threw the go-ahead touchdown with 1:47 left, and BYU finished the game with a goal-line stand.
That result alone would have led most Saturdays. On this Saturday, it was one of five top-seven losses.
No. 7 Texas, now 4-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play, lost 27-24 at home to Florida, now 5-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play, according to CNN and the NCAA.com live blog. Florida scored 24 unanswered points after trailing 17-3. Jadan Baugh's touchdown with 6:22 left proved decisive in the comeback.
Texas quarterback Arch Manning finished 14-of-20 for 173 yards and one touchdown, according to the reports, but he fumbled on a sack by Myles Graham, recovered by Kanye Clark, with under two minutes left. Manning was sacked five times in the game.
According to CNN and the NCAA.com live blog, it was Texas's first consecutive regular-season losses since 2021, while Florida recorded its first AP top-10 road win since 2012. Florida quarterback Trammel Jones Jr. made his collegiate start, Texas had been a 10.5-point favorite, and Florida coach Jon Sumrall picked up a signature win in his first year at Florida.
Alabama is shut down at Tennessee
No. 6 Alabama, now 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the SEC, lost 26-10 at No. 14 Tennessee, now 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the SEC, in the Third Saturday in October rivalry.
CNN reported that Tennessee held Alabama to 201 yards, recorded five sacks and forced four takeaways. DeSean Bishop ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns for the Volunteers.
Both teams were dealing with absences. Tennessee played without quarterback Faizon Brandon because of a shoulder injury, and George MacIntyre filled in. Alabama played without leading receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams, with Keelon Russell at quarterback for the Crimson Tide.
Alabama had been a 7.5-point favorite, according to CNN, but the game belonged to Tennessee's defense. It was Alabama's second straight loss, fans rushed the field afterward, and Tennessee coach Josh Heupel summed up his team's effort in two words quoted by CNN: "Phenomenal performance."
According to the SEC, cited by CNN, Georgia, Alabama and Texas losing on the same Saturday had not happened since October 26, 1996. That date helps explain why Saturday felt less like a normal round of upsets and more like a break in the sport's usual order.
Ohio State ends Indiana's long winning streak
The only top-seven loss that came against another top-seven team was No. 5 Indiana's 19-15 defeat to No. 4 Ohio State. Indiana is now 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten. Ohio State is 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten.
CNN reported that Indiana's 22-game winning streak ended with the loss. It was Indiana's first loss since the 2024 College Football Playoff game at Notre Dame, and it also ended a 19-game home winning streak.
The finish was painful for Indiana. Wide receiver Nick Marsh stepped out of bounds in the end zone, negating a would-be 27-yard touchdown on fourth-and-4 in the final minute, according to CNN. Indiana, with quarterback Josh Hoover, also had two turnovers and two missed field goals in the game.
Ohio State paid a price for the win. Quarterback Julian Sayin left with a right shoulder injury and returned with his arm in a sling, according to CNN. Coach Ryan Day said Sayin would miss "several weeks," CNN reported.
Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith caught a 38-yard fourth-down touchdown, his 12th touchdown catch of the season and the 39th of his career. According to CNN, that total tied Braylon Edwards's Big Ten career record, and Smith reached it in nine fewer games.
Miami is positioned to take over, and the rest of the board shifted too
While the teams around it fell, No. 3 Miami beat Florida State 43-35 in double overtime. As Previously reported in its coverage of Miami's double-overtime win over Florida State, Malachi Toney played a central role in the result. With Georgia and Notre Dame both losing, Miami is positioned to take over No. 1 when Sunday's AP poll arrives.
That wording matters. No new poll had been published in the verified reports used for this story, so Miami's rise is a position created by Saturday's results, not a confirmed ranking yet. The same caution applies across the board: Ohio State is expected to climb after beating Indiana, BYU is expected to climb after beating Notre Dame, and Tennessee is expected to climb after beating Alabama, but the order voters choose is still to come.
The playoff picture, framed only from Saturday's verified results, is suddenly less settled. Georgia, Alabama and Texas now carry losses that change their margins. Indiana's long winning streak is over, though its loss came to Ohio State. Notre Dame's loss at BYU strengthens BYU's own case while damaging Notre Dame's. Every one of those statements follows directly from the scores, not from an invented new ranking.
Elsewhere on Saturday, according to CNN's roundup, No. 22 LSU under Lane Kiffin beat No. 16 Mississippi State 31-3, No. 9 Ole Miss beat No. 13 Missouri 31-3, and No. 15 Kentucky won 21-13 at Oklahoma. Previously covered that last result separately in its report on Kentucky's 21-13 win at Oklahoma.

Days like this are why the regular season still matters so much in college football. A favorite can be 20.5 points, as Georgia was, and still lose on the final play. A team can score 24 unanswered points, as Florida did, and change the conversation around two programs at once. A defense can hold a rival to 201 yards, as Tennessee did, and turn a traditional rivalry game into a statement.
CNN's central fact, citing Sportradar, will be the one repeated for years: five of the top seven, on the same regular-season day, for the first time ever. Saturday did not just produce upsets. It produced a new reference point for every future Shakeup Saturday that tries to follow it.
