Sam Oh — s0m — is one of Valorant's smoothest operators. The former NRG pro built his reputation on a playstyle that looks effortless: crisp aim, cold timing, and the kind of clutch gene that turns rounds into highlights.
His story starts in Counter-Strike. Born June 7, 2002, s0m signed his first professional CS:GO contract at 17, in March 2019 with Team Envy, and was bought out of it by Gen.G that December. With Gen.G he won two notable titles in 2020 — DreamHack Open Anaheim in February and ESL One: Road to Rio North America in May — posting a 1.03 rating across 121 maps. Then, in October 2020, he did the thing that shocked the CS scene: he retired from Counter-Strike and signed with NRG to play Valorant, reuniting with his former captain Damian "daps" Steele and coach Chet Singh. He'd been streaming 51 hours of Valorant in three months against 26 of CS. The writing was on the wall; s0m just read it first.
The NRG era became the whole career. s0m joined NRG's Valorant roster in October 2020 as a duelist and never left — his entire Valorant career has been played under one banner, a rarity in an esport defined by roster churn. He quickly evolved from entry fragger into the team's flexible backbone, picking up controllers and whatever the meta demanded. In a role defined by thankless utility work, s0m made it look artistic: the Harbor picks nobody else touched, the lurk timings that broke rounds open, the calm that never cracked.
The international breakthrough came in 2023. With much of the former OpTic Gaming core absorbed into NRG, s0m finally got his stage: top eight at LOCK//IN São Paulo, then a fourth-place finish at Masters Tokyo. NRG finished second in VCT Americas that year, and s0m had established himself as one of North America's most reliable players — the guy whose floor was everyone else's ceiling. But Champions 2023 ended in the group stage after back-to-back upsets to Bilibili Gaming, and in September s0m stepped away from competition to focus on streaming.
The break didn't take. By May 2024 — between Stage 1 and Stage 2 — s0m was back on the NRG roster alongside the returning Pujan "FiNESSE" Mehta, chasing Champions points from a deficit. The team couldn't climb out of the hole and missed Champions 2024 entirely. What followed was the kind of year that ends careers: a 1-2 Kickoff finish in 2025, a first-round playoff exit in Stage 1, and a full rebuild — Malkolm "bonkar" Rench brought back as head coach, Logan "skuba" Jenkins in for the retired FNS. On paper, it looked like a teardown. On the server, it became a resurrection.
NRG's 2025 run is now Valorant folklore. Second place in Stage 2 punched the ticket to Champions Paris, and from there the team went on an undefeated run through the biggest event of the year — resilient comebacks, extended overtimes, and a five-map grand final against FNATIC that stands among the great series in the game's history. Sam "s0m" Oh, who had been with the organization since its first day in Valorant, was a world champion. Five years of grinding, two retirements-that-weren't, one roster rebuilt around him — and it ended with the trophy.
What sets him apart is the calm. Where other duelists play on pure adrenaline, s0m plays like he's solving a puzzle — patient, precise, and lethal. It is a style built for the biggest moments: the deeper the round, the quieter he gets, the more dangerous he becomes. Teammates have described the effect as stabilizing; opponents have described it as demoralizing. The highlight reels are full of 1v2s and 1v3s that look routine in his hands and impossible in everyone else's.
The stream is the other half of the legend. Even at his competitive peak, s0m was one of Valorant's biggest streamers, regularly pulling thousands of viewers with a broadcast style that mirrors his play: low-key, dryly funny, zero manufactured energy. The settings pages track him like a folk hero — 400 DPI, 0.8 sensitivity, the tiny white-dot crosshair — because a generation of players wants to aim the way s0m aims. His ranked grind streams became appointment viewing in their own right, the rare pro broadcast that's as educational as it is entertaining.
And then, at the absolute peak, he walked away — for now. On October 22, 2025, weeks after winning Champions Paris, s0m announced he was stepping back from competitive play. "I will be taking a break. Definitely not forever," he said, explaining that after ten years of competing across CS and Valorant, the world title felt like the right moment to pause. He stayed with NRG as a streamer and content creator. It was his second such break — the first ran from September 2023 to May 2024 — and the phrasing was deliberate: this is a pause, not a goodbye.
The numbers on the career: roughly $284,775 in prize winnings per Liquipedia, a world championship, two CS:GO titles, five years as the face of one organization's Valorant project, and a highlight reel that will outlive all of it. But the real stat is the loyalty — one org, one tag, from NRG's first Valorant roster to the confetti in Paris.
Previously covers s0m because the 2025 Champions run was one of the great stories in esports — the lifer who stayed, the team that rebuilt, the trophy that validated all of it. And because "definitely not forever" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. When he comes back, the server won't be ready.
