About Mang0
Mang0 — Joseph Manuel Marquez — is Melee's rockstar: the two-time EVO champion, Cloud9's longest-tenured fighting game star, and the most purely entertaining player the scene has ever produced. Born December 10, 1991, in Norwalk, California, he has been at the top of Super Smash Bros. Melee for the better part of two decades — a run of excellence and chaos that no other player in the game's history can match.
The legend started early and weird. Marquez began as a Jigglypuff main — inspired by the great King — and at fifteen he placed third at EVO 2007, beating the legendary Mew2King along the way. His innovations with the character were so dominant that Jigglypuff leapt up Melee's tier list, and his first major win came at Pound 3 in 2008. Then came the "Scorpion Master" era: Mang0 sandbagged majors under an alias, playing Mario and styling on the bracket, before returning to serious competition with Fox and Falco — the spacies that would define him.
The peak was 2013–2014. Mang0 won Genesis in 2009, then captured back-to-back EVO championships in 2013 and 2014, cementing himself as one of Melee's "Five Gods" alongside Armada, Hungrybox, Mew2King, and PPMD. He was ranked the best Melee player on the planet in 2013 and 2014 — and then again in 2021, a full decade after his first reign, which tells you everything about the longevity. The trophy case holds 36 majors: four Big House titles, three Revivals of Melee, three Super Smash Cons, two Pounds, two Get On My Levels, two Smash Summits, an MLG Anaheim, a DreamHack, and a Royal Flush, among many others.
In 2014 he joined Cloud9 and never left — the longest-tenured player in the org's history, through the game's entire modern era. His Fox and Falco defined an era of aggressive, improvisational spacie play: no flowchart, no fear, just reads and reflexes. He is widely considered the greatest Falco of all time and one of the greatest Foxes ever, and the GOAT debate in Melee is essentially a two-man conversation between him and Armada. When Mang0 is locked in, Melee looks like jazz.
The persona is the other half of the legend. The beer on stream, the pop-offs, the unfiltered commentary — Mang0 turned being himself into a brand before "authenticity" was a marketing word. He starred in 2013's The Smash Brothers documentary, the nine-part series that introduced Melee's gods to the world, and his Twitch channel — 496,000 followers strong — became the scene's living room. Melee fans who follow Leffen's villain arc or Ludwig's showmanship are watching descendants: the god who parties like a fan and plays like a legend came first.
Previously covers Mang0 because every scene needs its heartbeat, and Melee's has a spacie main. The Kid forever.
About this creator
Mang0's second act might be more impressive than his first. While most Melee gods faded or retired, the Kid just kept showing up — kept competing, kept streaming, kept the scene's soul intact through every era. The 2020s brought more majors: Smash Summit 11 and 12, Super Smash Con 2022, Tipped Off 15 and Supernova in 2024. Ranked top ten in the world for well over a decade…
Mang0's second act might be more impressive than his first. While most Melee gods faded or retired, the Kid just kept showing up — kept competing, kept streaming, kept the scene's soul intact through every era. The 2020s brought more majors: Smash Summit 11 and 12 in 2021 and 2022, Super Smash Con 2022, Lost Tech City and Mainstage in 2022, Tipped Off 15 and Supernova in 2024. Ranked top ten in the world for well over a decade, he remained a threat to win any bracket he entered into 2025 — an eighteen-year career at the top of a game that was supposed to kill its stars young.
The stream is the other legacy. Daily broadcasts mix high-level gameplay with the unfiltered hang: stories from the road, debates with chat, watch parties, and the occasional legendary pop-off. The subathons are events. The "Scorpion Master" memes are Melee folklore. The community that formed around the channel is one of Twitch's most loyal — hundreds of thousands of followers who showed up for the gameplay and stayed for the person.
What separates Mang0 on the sticks is the mental game. His adaptability mid-set is the stuff of commentary legend: down 0-2, beer in hand, crowd against him, and suddenly the reads start landing and the comeback is on. He plays on feel and nerve where others play on preparation, which is why his peaks are the highest the game has ever seen — and why his valleys are part of the show. He is the rare competitor who is as fun losing as winning, because the stakes feel real: he feels everything out loud.
The culture around him is Melee culture. The pop-offs, the crowd chants, the endless debates — Mang0 is the scene's id, its party, and its standard-bearer all at once. New fans discover Melee through his clips; old fans measure eras by his runs. When the documentary cameras rolled in 2013, he was the charismatic center; a decade later, he was still the center, still the Kid, still the guy the bracket needed.
Why he matters: esports careers are supposed to burn out. Mang0 is the proof that they don't have to — that you can be the best in the world, walk away from the grind, come back, be the best again, and build a community that loves you either way. Thirty-six majors, two EVOs, three separate eras of dominance, and a Twitch chat that never left. Love the chaos or hate it, the bracket is better with him in it.
Previously covers Mang0 because legends who never left are rare — and this one never will. The bracket needs its Kid, and the Kid needs his beer.
