About KarQ

Every competitive game has its professor — the creator players trust when they want to actually get better. For Overwatch, that professor is KarQ: Nathan Chan, the Canadian YouTuber and streamer who turned game education into appointment viewing and became the definitive reference library for one of the most complex shooters ever made.

Chan’s path to the classroom was accidental in the best way. A University of Toronto graduate, he was working part-time jobs and playing Overwatch for fun when he decided, around 2017, to make a few videos as a hobby. He posted them, shared them on Reddit, and watched them slowly snowball — until one day the YouTube algorithm picked one up and the hobby became a calling. In an interview about those early days, he described giving himself one year to make it work. The year worked.

What KarQ built was a format the Overwatch community didn’t know it needed: rigorous, entertaining, hero-by-hero education. His signature series — the “one tip versus every hero” videos, the complete ability breakdowns for new heroes, the little-known mechanics guides — became required viewing for competitive players. Where most gaming content chases highlights, KarQ chased understanding: why you should never place an Orisa Supercharger in the open, how momentum carries through movement abilities, the lingering melee hitboxes and body-blocking techniques that separate good players from great ones. He explained it all with a clarity that made high-level concepts feel learnable, and he did it for every hero in the roster.

The competitive establishment noticed. In 2018, KarQ served as Community Lead for Team Canada at the Overwatch World Cup, a role that put the educator at the center of the national-team apparatus. Then, in February 2019, the Toronto Defiant — one of the Overwatch League’s expansion franchises — recruited him as an official streamer, a recognition that his influence with the player base was an asset worth signing. It was a rare kind of validation: not a pro contract for playing, but a pro contract for teaching.

The empire has since diversified the way all durable creator businesses do. Beyond the main channel, KarQ runs KarQives as a second channel, KarQlips for clips, and dedicated outposts for new frontiers — including a Marvel Rivals channel as the hero-shooter landscape evolved — alongside active TikTok, Instagram, and Twitch presences under the karqgames banner. The format discipline never wavered: when a new hero like Sierra arrives with a fresh kit, KarQ’s ability-breakdown video is the community’s first stop.

Why KarQ matters is bigger than any single video. Overwatch is a game of thirty-plus heroes, each with abilities, counters, and micro-mechanics that interact in ways no tutorial can fully cover. KarQ became the living manual — the creator a generation of players opened in a second tab while they queued. In an era when gaming content skews toward spectacle, he proved that teaching, done with genuine expertise and real production care, could build a career as durable as any highlight reel. The professor’s office hours never really end; the roster just keeps growing.

The origin details are worth savoring, because they’re so ordinary. Before Overwatch, Chan’s gaming life ran through PlayStation titles and a deep RuneScape phase — he once set up an auto-clicker to grind alchemy, got penalized for breaking the rules, and took it as a sign to try other games like Call of Duty. When Overwatch launched in 2016, he bought it, played it casually for six months while working part-time jobs through school, and only started making videos because he liked making videos. He shared the first ones on Reddit. They got a few views. Then the algorithm found one, and the snowball he’d been pushing for months started rolling downhill on its own.

The ESTNN interview from those early years captures the gamble perfectly: he gave himself one year. What the year revealed was a gap in the market nobody had properly filled. Overwatch guides existed, but they were dry; entertainment existed, but it was shallow. KarQ fused them — genuine Grandmaster-level understanding delivered with the pacing and personality of a creator who actually enjoys the game. The “for the love of Jeff Kaplan, protect your Supercharger” energy — exasperated, funny, deeply knowledgeable — became a signature tone: the teacher who loves the subject enough to be annoyed when you get it wrong.

The business around the teaching grew with the same care. The karqgames brand spans merch, Amazon storefronts, and a Discord community; the content spans YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, and Instagram; and the format has proven portable across games, from Overwatch to Marvel Rivals. Through it all, the channel stayed remarkably drama-free in an industry that runs on beef — a positive, educational corner of gaming YouTube that parents could leave on and competitors could cite. That reputation is part of the product: when KarQ explains a hero, the community trusts the explanation, because the explainer has never given them a reason not to.

About this creator

KarQ is Overwatch’s support sage: the streamer whose educational content — the “BAPTISTE GOOD” streams, the hero guides, and the /karq broadcasts — made him the game’s most trusted teacher. The support role, elevated to art. The educational format is the mission: “Ana/Wuyang sometimes kiri if needed” — the hero picks, the decision trees, and…
