The Story

At Reed Green Coliseum, they call him "Bully" — and the nickname is the whole scouting report. Tylik Weeks, the New York-bred forward who detonated onto the Division I scene as a junior, turned the 2025–26 Southern Miss Golden Eagles into appointment television every single night. His 19.7 points per game was the highest scoring average by a Golden Eagle since Bernard Haslett's 19.8 in 1993–94, his 21 straight double-figure games were the second-longest streak in program history, and his 30-point second half against Troy on Valentine's Day — the first 30-point half by a Southern Miss player without overtime since the early 1970s — is already program lore. When the Golden Eagles needed a bucket, everybody in the building knew where the ball was going, and nobody could stop it anyway.

Weeks was the engine of a season that reminded everyone what Jay Ladner is building in Hattiesburg. The 2025–26 Golden Eagles finished 19–16 with a 9–9 Sun Belt record, won the Pensacola Invitational in the fall, then ripped off three straight wins in the Sun Belt Tournament to reach the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Troy. The 19 wins were the second-most of Ladner's tenure, and since the start of the 2022–23 season the Golden Eagles are 45–12 at Reed Green Coliseum — one of the toughest home courts in the Sun Belt, exactly the way Ladner drew it up when he came home.

Ladner is a Southern Miss man through and through: a 1988 graduate and former Golden Eagle player now entering his eighth season as head coach of his alma mater. His arc tells the story of the modern program. He inherited a rebuild and produced one of the great turnarounds in recent college basketball memory — from seven wins to 25 in 2022–23, tied for the most victories in the school's Division I era, with a Sun Belt regular-season title, a perfect 15–0 home record (tying the 2011–12 team for the best home mark in program history) and 14 conference wins (tying the 1949–50 team for the most league wins ever). The league noticed: Ladner was named NABC District 23 Coach of the Year and Sun Belt Coach of the Year. For the first time since Austin Crowley in that 2022–23 season, he coached a First Team All-Sun Belt player in Weeks — the program's star pipeline is flowing again.

The supporting cast around Weeks gave the 2025–26 team its texture. Guard Isaac Taveras was emerging as a two-way force before a hand injury sidelined him in December. Senior Dylan Brumfield — the alley-oop connection on Weeks's famous buzzer-beating dunk against Grambling State — brought the veteran steadiness. Israel "Izzy" Hart and Tegra Izay rounded out a rotation that played with the toughness and grit Ladner demands; after a midseason five-game skid, the Golden Eagles broke through with a 73–65 win over James Madison in which they held the Dukes to 21 first-half points. Defense, rebounding, effort — the Hattiesburg formula.

That formula has deep roots. Southern Miss basketball's golden age under Larry Eustachy peaked with the 2011–12 team that went 25–9 and reached the NCAA Tournament, and the program's history stretches back through the Metro Conference wars of the 1980s and early '90s, when the Golden Eagles were a perennial thorn in the side of bigger brands. Reed Green Coliseum, the program's home since the mid-1960s, has seen all of it — and the last four seasons have been its loudest in a decade, with crowds reawakened and the building restored as a genuine home-court weapon.

The Sun Belt move in 2022 changed the program's geometry. Leaving Conference USA for a league built on regional rivalries and football Saturdays gave Southern Miss basketball natural enemies — Louisiana, Troy, South Alabama, Texas State — and a tournament in which the Golden Eagles are now a fixture rather than an afterthought. The 2026 semifinal run, with Weeks dropping 30-plus in back-to-back games to open the tournament, was the proof of concept: this program travels, this program defends, and this program has the best closer in the league.

What comes next is the question that will define Ladner's eighth season. Weeks's junior-year explosion — 37 points against North Florida in Pensacola, 32 against Troy with 16 straight points in one stretch, 30 of his points coming in the second half — puts him on every preseason watch list that matters in the Sun Belt. If Taveras returns healthy and the portal adds shooting around the Bully, the Golden Eagles have the skeleton of a team that can win the league. The 2022–23 team showed the ceiling is 25 wins and a regular-season title. The 2025–26 team showed the floor is a tournament semifinal with the conference's most unstoppable scorer.

In Hattiesburg, basketball has always been the winter heartbeat of a football town — and right now that heartbeat is loud. The Golden Eagles defend their home floor like it is sacred ground, they have a star who embraces the Bully persona, and they have a coach who bled black and gold long before he ever drew up a play for it. The Sun Belt has been warned: Southern Miss is not rebuilding. It is reloading.
