The Story

The Lafayette Leopards played in the Final Four — in 1957, from an era when a small school in Easton, Pennsylvania, stood among the very best teams in America. It remains the program's lone trip to the sport's biggest stage, and in the Lehigh Valley, the '57 finalists are immortal.

The 1950s were the golden age: the Final Four run, genuine national relevance, and the foundation of everything Lafayette basketball has been since. The Leopards were a charter presence in the college game's early decades, and their place in the sport's history is secure — a program that has seen the mountaintop and never stopped chasing it again.

But the program's lifeblood isn't a banner from 1957. It's the opponent 17 miles down the road. "The Rivalry" with Lehigh is the most-played rivalry in college basketball — 150-plus meetings, dating to 1902, a century-plus of mutual obsession that defines the Lehigh Valley's sports soul. When these two meet, records don't matter; only the next one does. In February 2025, the Leopards made it the 150th series win in program history, a 78-70 Senior Day triumph at Kirby Sports Center that sent the home crowd into delirium.

The Kirby Sports Center is the program's Easton home: 3,500 seats, newly refurbished, where the Leopard faithful pack the gym and make life miserable for visitors. It's old-school Patriot League basketball — intimate, intense, and proud — and the 2024-25 inaugural Lafayette Classic, the Thanksgiving weekend round-robin that the Leopards hosted at 2-1, gave the building a new tradition to grow.

The man in charge is Mike McGarvey, who took over as the 20th head coach in program history on March 29, 2023, and now enters his fifth season. McGarvey inherited a rebuild and has attacked it the patient way: player development, academic culture, and a defense-first identity. The trajectory tells the story — the win total climbed for three straight seasons through 2024-25, and the 2025-26 campaign (11-21, 8-10 in the Patriot League) was a step back in record but not in fight: five league wins came by a combined 11 points, and the Leopards swept Holy Cross and Army while sitting top 10 in the conference in 11 statistical categories and seventh in the entire NCAA in assist-to-turnover ratio.

The 2024-25 season was the breakthrough. A slow non-conference start gave way to a 2-1 Lafayette Classic, then a run that included a stunning 76-61 road win at defending conference champion Colgate and the 150th series victory over Lehigh. Justin Vander Baan was the story of the winter: the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, a Third Team and All-Defensive selection who finished his Leopard career second all-time in program blocks with 188 — and who, from January 16-20, led the entire nation in blocks. Around him, freshmen Alex Chaikin (Third Team, All-Rookie) and Caleb Williams (All-Rookie) announced themselves as the foundation of the next good Lafayette team.

Captain Ryan Pettit '26 led the program through Senior Day and into the Patriot League tournament's first round, and two starting guards earned All-Patriot League Third Team and Academic All-League honors — the Lafayette formula in miniature: tough, smart, and bought in.

The Patriot League wars define every season. Colgate — the league's modern standard, and the team Lafayette stunned on the road — looms largest. Bucknell, American, Navy and Boston University bring their own wars. And Lehigh, always Lehigh: the Rivalry, the most-played in the sport, the game that can salvage any season and the one no Lafayette team can ever afford to lose.

The identity fits the institution. Lafayette College is one of America's finest liberal arts schools, and the basketball program carries that ethos: student-athletes who defend, share the ball — remember that seventh-in-the-nation assist-to-turnover mark — and graduate. It's not the flashiest formula, but in a one-bid league where March is decided by execution, it's the right one.

The 2026-27 season is about the next step: turning close losses into wins, turning a young core into a veteran one, and turning the Patriot League tournament from a first-round exit into a run. The Leopards have been building toward something for three years. The Valley is waiting to see what it is — and the next chapter of The Rivalry is never far away.

The non-conference philosophy under McGarvey has been deliberate: test the team early, learn what it is, and be ready when league play starts. The second annual Lafayette Classic over Thanksgiving weekend has become the centerpiece of that approach — a home tournament in a refurbished building, a chance to stack wins in front of the home crowd, and an early measuring stick for where the Leopards stand. In a league where seeding and momentum decide everything in March, those November and December reps are currency.

Easton itself is part of the pitch. A classic college town on the Delaware River, twenty minutes from the Lehigh Valley's population centers and an easy trip from Philadelphia and New York, Lafayette offers the true small-school experience: professors who know your name, a campus that turns out for The Rivalry, and a basketball program where every player matters. For recruits who want the ball, the minutes, and the education, the Leopards' offer is real — and the roster McGarvey is building reflects it.
