The Heisman winner is building something on the Highest of Seven Hills. Charlie Ward — the 1993 Heisman Trophy winner as Florida State’s quarterback, an 11-year NBA point guard with the Knicks, Rockets and Spurs, and still FSU’s all-time steals leader — took over Florida A&M in the spring of 2025 and promptly went 14-17 with an 11-7 SWAC record and a trip to the conference tournament semifinals. Year two comes with nine signees, a rising profile, and a season opener the whole state will be watching: Nov. 2 against Florida State in Tampa.

That opener is the Orion180 Tip-Off Classic at Benchmark International Arena, and it’s a historic collision — the first regular-season meeting between the Rattlers and the Seminoles since 1991, packaged as a doubleheader with Florida vs. Miami. Four of the state’s premier programs, one building, one night. FSU head coach Luke Loucks called Ward “a great friend” and said, “We have tremendous respect for the program he’s building at FAMU.” For the Rattlers, it’s the highest-profile platform the program has had in years — a chance to announce intentions to fans, recruits and media across Florida.

Ward’s second roster is built the way second rosters should be: around the guys who proved it. Junior guard Antonio Baker Jr., the Savannah product, averaged 9.9 points last season and closed on a burner — 13.3 a game over the final eight contests. The frontcourt returns two 6-11 anchors: Tuscan Onuoha, the Sydney native, and Miles Ndalama, the Zambian, pending an NCAA waiver. The nine newcomers stretch from the high school ranks to the JUCO circuit to the portal, headlined by 6-5 Hillsborough guard Chandler Davis (21.4 points, 8 rebounds, 3.9 assists a game) and Oregon State transfer Ja’Quavis Willford.

The class has flavor: Jaden Kempson (Albany), Ralph Martino Jr. (Saint Francis), Alex Montes (Vincennes), Jayden Joseph (Gillion Academy) — and a famous name in Anquan Boldin Jr., the son of the NFL star, now a junior guard in Tallahassee. It’s a roster built for the SWAC wars: long, athletic, deep at guard, with Ward’s own point-guard DNA all over the backcourt.

Those wars are the season. FAMU moved from the MEAC to the SWAC in 2021, and the league is a gauntlet — Southern, Grambling, Alcorn, Jackson State, Bethune-Cookman (the Florida Classic rivalry, the fiercest in HBCU football and plenty hot in basketball too). The Rattlers play at UAB on Nov. 9 and at Florida on Dec. 21, but the schedule that matters starts in January, when the SWAC race sorts itself out and every road trip is a test of nerve.

The history here is HBCU royalty. Florida A&M — founded 1887, one of the nation’s great Black institutions — has MEAC tournament titles and NCAA bids in 1999, 2004 and 2007 on the ledger. The Rattlers’ identity is bigger than basketball: the Marching 100, the Orange and Green, a fan base that treats home games at the Al Lawson Center like family reunions. Ward, a Tallahassee legend, understood the assignment the day he took the job.

What success looks like: a winning record, a top-four SWAC seed, and a Saturday in March with a bid on the line. The program’s profile is rising — the Tampa opener proves it — and Ward’s NBA pedigree is a recruiting weapon no one else in the league can match. The Rattlers aren’t sneaking up on anyone anymore. That’s the point.

Ward coaches like the point guard he was — and he was a great one. The former Knicks starter, who still holds FSU’s career steals record, demands pace with purpose: push the ball, hunt early offense, and defend the point of attack like your scholarship depends on it. It’s no accident the roster is stacked with guards; Ward wants ballhandlers everywhere, pressure on every possession, and a team that plays the way he played — smart, tough, and fast.

The SWAC tournament math favors the prepared. The league sends its champion to the NCAA Tournament, and the Rattlers have already shown they can get to the semifinals — they did it in Ward’s first year. The step from semifinal Saturday to championship Sunday is the whole job now, and it runs through January and February road trips to places like Baton Rouge, Grambling and Jackson, where the crowds are hostile and the basketball is personal.

There’s also the culture piece, and at FAMU it matters as much as the X’s and O’s. The Marching 100, the Orange and Green, the Highest of Seven Hills — this is a university where game day is a community event and the Rattlers are the community’s team. Ward didn’t just inherit a roster; he inherited a responsibility. The Tampa opener is the first national-stage test of whether the program is ready to carry it.
